We are extremely proud to have achieved the prestigious Green Flag Award as part of the Eco Schools Programme http://www.eco-schools.org.uk/about-us/ for the fourth consecutive time. The award celebrates all that we do to show our environmental awareness and action over nine key areas; Biodiversity, Energy, Litter, Waste, Water, School Grounds, Healthy Living, Transport and Global Citizenship. Every two years we reapply, with our next application due for renewal in Summer 2021.

Some of our work over the past year has included working with the Modern and Medieval Languages Faculty at Cambridge University to design a biodiverse outdoor area and designing the packaging for a Fairtrade chocolate bar in conjunction with the Leys School. We annually get involved with the RSPB Birdwatch and host an Eco Picnic in the Summer term (with the exception of Summer 2020) as well as other events. We also have links with the Friends of Paradise https://paradisenaturereserve.wordpress.com/, our own gardening club and the local county council.

Usually, our Eco Committee is elected each year from Key Stage 2 classes to lead initiatives across the school. This group would meet once a half term to discuss items on the action plan, feedback and plan next steps. School council meetings, assemblies, whole school eco days and lunchtime action groups are where the rest of the school would become actively involved.

This year the eco committee is running slightly differently, due to Covid-restrictions. Year 5 are taking the lead in meetings, and have voted in a Chair, Deputy and Secretary. We are holding Zoom assemblies to get the rest of the school involved to help raise awareness, launch campaigns and organise competitions.

In November, the committee are holding an optional art competition, which has a focus on raising awareness of marine life. They have asked people to create a sea creature made from recycled plastic to highlight the impact that plastic has on marine life. Photos of creations can be emailed into school, and work will be shown in an Eco Assembly and displayed on the school website.
